Q1. Does the cost of taking my car on the ferry include the driver and passengers accompanying it?

No, there is an individual charge for the vehicle plus the cost of each person travelling. See the ferry rates tables for prices.

Q2. How long does the journey take?

The journey time from Wellington to Picton on The Interislander vessels - Kaitaki, Arahura and Aratere - is 3 hours.

Q3. How do I get to the Interislander terminals in Wellington and Picton?

The Interislander Terminal, Wellington: This terminal is located on Aotea Quay beside the motorway on State Highway One. (There is a free shuttle bus from Platform 9, Wellington Railway Station, 35 minutes prior to each sailing). Passengers requiring connections to the airport should take the free shuttle bus to the railway station, then follow signs to the bus terminal. There are regular shuttle buses from the bus terminal to the airport. The journey time takes approximately 30 minutes.

The Picton Terminal: This terminal services both The Interislander ferries can be reached from either Auckland Street or London Quay. Vehicle check-in is via Kent Street.

Q4. How do I get to the Bluebridge terminals in Wellington and Picton?

In Wellington, the Bluebridge terminal is conveniently located in the central city opposite Wellington Railway Station and only a short distance from a range of accommodation options. If you’re heading south towards Wellington, take the Aotea Quay exit off the motorway and follow it round past the imposing Westpac Trust stadium on your right. The terminal is approximately one kilometer further on your left.

In Picton, the Bluebridge terminal is less than a kilometer from Picton town centre – for foot passengers a shuttle service is available from the I-Site.If you’re driving north on State Highway 1 towards Picton, turn left at Kent Street and travel less than a kilometer until you reach the roundabout and Bluebridge terminal ahead on your left. Both terminals offer plenty of space to park up and wait for your ferry sailing. For information on longer term parking (which is not available on site) please ask one of the staff members who will tell you about nearby options.

Q5. What parking facilities are available at the ferry terminals?

Pay and Display parking is $10 per day and needs to be pre paid on arrival.

Picton Terminal Parking
Marlborough Sounds Storage Ltd provides parking services and is located at 7 Market Street, Picton. The manager is Mark Whittaker, phone 021 335 136 , Fax (03) 573 5136. Inside undercover car storage for NZ$30.00 for 1 or 2 nights and then NZ$10.00 for each consecutive night thereafter. Long term parking is also available by arrangement.

Q6. How many bags can I take on a ferry?

Hand Baggage: Small hand baggage can be taken onboard The Interislander as personal hand luggage and at the owner's risk. Coin operated lockers are available onboard The Interislander for the storage of these small items.

Checked-in Baggage: Larger baggage, including backpacks, must be checked-in at the Wellington or Picton terminals. Baggage can then be collected from the carousels at the arrival port. The allowance is two pieces of baggage per person, weighing up to 30kg per item and no more than 200 linear cm (height + length + width). Baggage in excess of this may be conveyed subject to availability and excess charges but baggage exceeding 50kg or 350 linear cm will not be accepted.

Q7. Can I take my pet on the ferry? What special arrangements do I need to make?

Yes, you can take your pets in the ferry. Animals will be accepted on The Interislander as follows:
  • Guide dogs may remain in the company of blind persons. There is no charge for a guide dog.
  • Dogs can be placed in dog kennels. The kennels are located on the rail deck of The Interislander. Passengers place their dogs in the kennels themselves. There are a limited number of kennels therefore it is necessary to book early. There is a small charge for a kennel - $10 on The Interislander, $15 on The Lynx. Please bring a blanket, as this will make the dog more comfortable on the steel kennel floor.
  • Dogs and other animals remaining in their owners vehicle will not be charged (excludes campervans taking cattle, horses, sheep etc). Animals must remain in the vehicle throughout the journey and have fresh water available to them.
